I cannot access my blog:

I get "internal server error"
I ponder whether it is connected to my being unable to change the permalinks setting from /%sample-post%/ to /%postname%/
The .htaccess file has the text supplied by WP and the write permissions are set at 755
The WP install was done by Softaculous and the wp directory is
http://mycaravan-myhome.infochalice.com/wp
and the blog site home page is
http://mycaravan-myhome.infochalice.com
I am out of ideas, so does anyone have a suggestion, please
